Manga Time Kirara Max magazine has revealed that the anime adaptation of Shoko Iwami’s 4-koma manga series Kanamemo, first announced last month, will be produced as a television series.

I love Kino no Tabi (Kino’s Journey) and was sad to see Tokyopop discontinue the light novels after the first volume. Do you think the novels will be released in the US again? What are the chances of the movies “Land of Sickness” (2007) and “Life Goes On” (2005) being licensed?

Digimon: Data Squad to Hit US DVD

Home entertainment film distributor Well Go USA has obtained the North American DVD distribution rights to Toei’s 2006 “Digimon: Data Squad” (Digimon Savers) television series. The first 13 (presumably dubbed only) episodes of the 48 episode series will be released in a boxed set later this spring. The series aired on America’s Toon Disney network from October 2007 to November 2008.

Appliya Brings Evangelion to the iPhone

Tokyo-based iPhone application developer Appliya has announced plans for an international release of “Rebuild of Evangelion” themed applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The apps, jointly produced by Appliya and Broccoli are planned for submission to Apple this month. The initial applications will be “casual” apps that utilize the visual style, characters, and storyline from the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. These applications will take advantage of the innovative touch screen on the iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as the device’s camera, calendar functions, and clock.

Famitsu Magazine has published the first “key visual” and character profile shots for the upcoming Valkyrie Chronicles (Senjo no Valkyria) anime television series. The alternate history military action/drama, based on Sega’s Playstation 3 strategy RPG, is scheduled to premiere in April.

Triad Toys Acquires Lone Wolf Toy License

Triad Toys, maker of high end collectible action figures, has acquired a three-year license to create a range of collectibles including 12-inch action figures and statues based on Kazuo Koike and Kojima Goseki’s classic Lone Wolf & Cub manga series. Triad is currently working on figures of Ogami and Daigoro and expects to have them ready for retailers in August or September.

God Hand Teru TV Drama in Development

The TBS television network has announced a planned April 11 premiere of a live action television series adaptation of Kazuki Yamamoto’s currently ongoing medical drama manga series God Hand Teru. The story concentrates on Teru Mahigashi, an aspiring but novice surgeon whose miraculous “god hand” medical prowess emerges in times of crisis.

Ask John: Are Fansubs Superior to Commercial Translations?

Question:
Lately it seems a lot of fansub watchers have [done] a lot of monolithic thinking on various issues — the big one of which is that the best fansubbers quality and accuracy of translations are always better than those of R1 localizing studios/production companies. What are your thoughts on this? Is there some grain of truth here or have they just started spreading false propaganda and people just believe whatever their peers on forums tell them?

Udon Acquires Silent Möbius

Udon Acquires Silent Mobius

Udon Entertainment has announced its acquisition of English language distribution rights to Kia Asamiya’s supernatural sci-fi adventure manga series Silent Möbius. Asamiya’s original 12 volume manga series premiered in 1991. Viz published the core series in English from 1991 through early 2003 with portions of the original monochrome art rendered in color. The manga also spawned a Playstation game, two theatrical anime movies, and a 26 episode anime television series.

Udon’s “Complete Edition” will features a new translation, color illustrations, character profiles, interviews, and pages in monochrome or color as they were originally published in Japan. Udon’s plans call for a publication of the original 12 volume series plus the the two-volume Silent Möbius Tales series and the single volume Silent Möbius Klein volume never previously published in English.

The first 200 page volume of Silent Möbius: Complete Edition will go on sale at $14.99 this August.
