FUNimation Acquires Ookiku Furikabutte

FUNimation has formally revealed its acquisition of North American distribution rights to the 2007 baseball anime television series Ookiku Furikabutte. The 26 episode series will be released in America under the title “Big Windup!”
Quite an unexpected license since the show was very popular among Japanese female viewers but made very minimal inroads into the American fan community last year.

They could be banking on the running innuendo to help push it as a comedy. My anime club screened it for a few episodes earlier this year and despite the fact that we’re all in our twenties to thirties we couldn’t help but fall over laughing at the excessive use of the terms “pitcher”, “catcher”, and phrases like “I’ve never had so much fun on the mound before”, “Behind every good pitcher is a great catcher”, and other such silliness. If they market it like this, it could become a cult classic.
