The studio in charge of animation production was oftentimes disappointing with its past productions. I remember 2ch comments from the time Spice & Wolf was announced. They were fairly pessimistic, if not insultingly negative towards IMAGIN and the success of this work prior to broadcast.
Animation values were pretty good, all things considered, but yes, the show's brevity is its biggest weakness. Hopefully, we'll see a second season of it sometime in the future.

I've liked what I've seen of the series so far, but the manga had more depth. I agree that it would be better if the series was longer. Maybe they'll be a second season.

it's sad because Wolf & Spice would have been several times as good with a little more production value. The story, characters and subject matter are unusually sophisticated, but the consistently shoddy animation tells you how quickly the show was developed and produced-- and that translated into its uneven storytelling. It's amazing how despite that the series remained interesting and engaging, but like John hinted at, Wolf & Spice deserves far more than what it got production-wise.
