Ask John: Can the Live Action Dragon Ball Movie be Any Good?

Question:
Is there reason to hope that the Dragonball movie would be a quality movie (obviously an incredibly subjective question)? I’d assume the special effects are there, but I’m also of the opinion that certain anime wouldn’t translate well at all to live-action.

The official ToLove-Ru (pronounced as “Toraburu”) homepage now hosts a small resolution trailer for the upcoming ToLove-Ru anime television series. The trailer is also available in higher resolution from the TBS ToLove-Ru homepage. The series is scheduled to premier in April.

Evangelion 1.0 DVD Release Scheduled

Japanese home entertainment distribution company King Records has announced that the 2007 Evangelion Shin Gekijouban: Jou motion picture will be released on Japanese DVD in April. The film will be released in a special edition double disc package on April 25, retailing at 5,985 yen, followed by a single disc standard release on May 21, retailing at 4,935 yen. King Records has formally stated that there are presently no plans for an HD DVD or Blu-ray version of the film.

Maria Holic Anime Planned?

Japanese fan site Moon Phase reports the unconfirmed news that Minari Endo’s romantic comedy manga series Maria Holic will debut as an anime series in January 2009.

New Live Action Adaptations of Manga Announced

Reportedly the current issue of Magazine Special, published by Kodansha, contains an announcement that Takeru Nagayoshi’s comedy manga series Sumire Sixteen!! (Sumire 16-Sai!!) will be adapted into a live action television series. The Sumire Sixteen!! manga is the story of highschool girl Yotsuya Sumire, who is actually a life-sized puppet operated by an adult male ventriloquist.

Comic Valkyrie Magazine has formally announced that Ataru Cagiva’s martial arts action manga series Mitsurugi Haruka Kiken Ippatsu will be adapted into a 4 episode live action TV drama premiering at 2AM on the morning of March 8th.

New MariMite TV Series Announced

Although Shueisha’s Cobalt Magazine first announced plans for the production of a fourth Maria-sama ga Miteru anime series in July 2007, the official Maria-sama ga Miteru homepage has now announced that the fourth series will be a television series. The first two “MariMite” anime series were broadcast on Japanese television in 2004. The third series was released directly to home video in 2006.

Jinzo Toriumi Dead at 78

Novelist and screenwriter Jinzo Toriumi died of liver cancer on Thursday morning at a hospital in Shinjuku. He was 78. A funeral service will be held on the 20th.

Toriumi will be best known to anime fans as a screenwriter for classic anime television series including Gatchaman, Mach Go Go Go, Time Bokan, Yattaman, Mister Ajiko, and Armored Trooper Votoms.

Emma Domestic Trailer Released

The official American homepage for the upcoming domestic release of the Emma: A Victorian Romance anime television series now hosts a streaming trailer. The anime series will be released domestically in two subtitled complete season boxed sets beginning June 24th.

Manga Named to Librarians’ Great Graphic Novels List

The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has published its finalized second annual list of “Great Graphic Novels for Teens.” Among the 43 titles represented in this year’s list, 14 are manga. The selections were not ranked in numerical order, but ten of the titles, including Setona Mizushiro’s After School Nightmare, Kaoru Mori’s Emma, and Yuji Iwahara’s King of Thorn were selected as the top ten recommendations.

Shigofumi Episode 3 Censored?

The official Japanese homepage for the current Shigofumi anime television series now hosts a vague, apologetic message from the animation production staff reporting that part of episode 3 has been altered in response to recent Japanese social concerns.
