Da Capo II Second Season Announced

Japanese home entertainment distributor Starchild has formally announced an April 2008 premier for the Da Capo II Second Season anime television series. The new anime will be the fourth D.C. anime television series, and a direct sequel to the recently concluded Da Capo II television series.

Gonzo Announces Commercial Speed Grapher Downloads

Gonzo has formally announced plans to offer the Speed Grapher anime television series through commercial digital transfer as a year long experiment to explore the viability of peer-to-peer commercial anime distribution. Episodes will be available as copy-protected download-to-own digital files in standard definition at 1,000 yen per episode, and high definition at 1,500 yen per episode. Gonzo will also offer 2.5 minute long episodes of the Project PAPO CG animation at 150 yen per episode.

Commercial downloading requires installation of the “SkeedCast” content delivery program and may be restricted to consumers within Japan only.

Icarus Publishing Debuts Comic AG Digital

American adult manga publishing company Icarus Publishing now offers the 100+ page first issue of its Comic AG Digital erotic manga anthology magazine for free online distribution. The digital magazine is, of course, intended for adult readers only.

Ask John: Could Switching to Subtitles Only Save America’s Anime Industry?

Question:
Dubbing costs a lot and many people (myself included) don’t even listen to dubs. We prefer watching a work in its original language. How many people care about dubs? Would American anime distributors make more profit if they released subbed-only anime DVDs?

Golgo 13 Anime TV Series Announced

Small text on the top corner of the cover of the January 10th issue of Japan’s Big Comic magazine reveals plans for an anime television series adaptation of Takao Saito’s long running action drama manga serial Golgo 13. Reportedly the new anime will premier next spring.

The Golgo 13 manga series, which began in 1968, currently has 147 collected volumes and is still ongoing, and has been adapted into two live action motion pictures in 1973 & 1977, an anime motion picture in 1983, and a 1998 anime OVA.

Third Gag Manga Biyori Series Announced

Japanese television network Kids-Station has announced plans to broadcast the Gag Manga Biyori 3 anime television series next year. Akitaro Daichi, director behind the first two Masuda Kousuke Gekijou Gag Manga Biyori television series will return to helm the third series. The official Gag Manga Biyori 3 web page features a teaser trailer announcing the production. Click the red “PV” button in the center of the page to view the Flash trailer.

Next Fist of the North Star Anime Release Scheduled

The official Japanese Hokuto no Ken (“Fist of the North Star”) website has announced that the Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken Toki Den (New Saviour Legend Fist of the North Star Toki Story) OVA series, originally planned for released in late 2007, will debut on March 26, 2008.

Strike Witches TV Anime Announced?

An uncited report on the Japanese Moon Phase message board claims that the Strike Witches multimedia project will be developed into an anime television series. The report also states that a manga adaptation will begin in the March 2008 issue of Comp Ace Magazine. Gonzo produced a short Strike Witches anime OVA in January 2007.

Second International Manga Award Competition Launched

The Japanese government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally started its second International Manga Award competiton. The contest is open to amateur and professional artists from outside Japan. The entry deadline is February 29, 2008.

File Sharing Hits All-Time High in Japan

The results of a recent poll organized by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, the Japan and International Motion Picture Copyright Association, and the Association of Copyright for Computer Software reveal that the number of Japanese residents using file-sharing internet software has tripled since June 2006, reaching an all-time high. “As of September this year 9.6 per cent of internet users in Japan were using file-sharing software compared with just 3.5 per cent in June 2006, while the average number of files downloaded stood at 481 in September against 194 in the middle of last year, the survey said.”

Magicians Academy Anime Announced
