Fourth Major Anime Series Announced

Japanese news site Goo has reported that a fourth series for the baseball drama anime television series Major will premier on January 5th. The Major television anime premiered in 2004.

Veteran Anime Composer Dead

Goh Misawa, the soundtrack composer for the 1972 Devilman and 1973 Aim For The Ace! anime television series, died of esophageal cancer in a hospital outside Palm Springs, California, on the morning of November 20. He was 79. Misawa moved from Japan to America, where he continued to create music and dub movies, in 1976.

Otoko Juku Movie Trailers Online

The official homepage for writer/director/star Tak Sakaguchi’s live action film adaptation of Akira Miyashita’s Sakigake! Otoko Juku manga now hosts two streaming trailers. The movie is scheduled for Japanese theatrical release in January.

Ask John: Why Aren’t Video Games Given the Same Artistic Respect as Anime?

Question:
While anime fans take issues when elements in an anime are altered, for the most part, video games fans do not have the same concern if it happens in a video game. For example, anime purists will take issue when a character’s Japanese name is Americanized, but when a prominent video game company like Nintendo changed a female character from “Rosetta” to “Rosalina” in the English version (a localization, not a translation) of “Super Mario Galaxy,” there are nearly no protests by video game fans. Why the double-standard?

Toei to Emphasize Anime Distribution in Latin America

Papo de Budega reports that Toei Animation president & COO Yosuke Kobayashi and Director Kaz Yamashita visited Brazil. During a press conference, the pair expressed interest in encouraging further anime broadcast on free broadcast TV in Brazil and Latin America, including a possible future broadcast of the 4Kids edit of One Piece.

Yamashita also revealed that Toei Animation has delayed its new Rose of Versaille anime film from a late 2007 release until 2009 in order to allow animators more time to work on the picture.

On-chan Anime Announced

The HTB (Hokkaido Television Broadcasting Company) television network has formally announced that the anime television series “Yumemil, Anime On-chan” will debut on January 18th.

Freedom Project Extended

Bandai Visual has formally announced that the planned 6 episode OVA series Freedom, part of the multi-media “Freedom Project” advertising campaign, will be extended with a seventh episode.

Southern Island Shutters

Arizona-based toy production company Southern Island LLC has reportedly declared bankruptcy and ceased all operations. The company’s website is now offline, and its company phone lines have been disconnected. Southern Island was one of America’s original licensors to produce toy merchandise based on anime franchises including Blue Gender, Case Closed (Detective Conan), Fruits Basket, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Bankruptcy liquidator BK Assets will reportedly begin auctioning about 9,740 new toys from Southern Island’s inventory on December 11 on auction site eBay.

Fifth Precure Series Announced

Toei has formally announced the Yes! Precure 5 Go Go! anime television series. The sequel to Yes! Precure 5, the fourth Futari wa Precure magical girl anime television series, will debut early next year.

Manga Artist Keichiro Oki Dead

Pachi-Slo Panic 7 magazine has announced that manga creator Keichiro Oki passed away during the night of November 19th. Oki was highly respected in Japan’s manga community for his pachinko and “pachi-slo” (Pachinko slot machine) manga series including Flag no Joe, Dr. Okino no Pachinko Kyoshitsu, and Bakuretsu! Pachinko Sengoku Emaki no Fubichi.

Viz Acquires A Theater

Viz Media has purchased its own 150 seat movie theater in the heart of San Francisco’s Japan Town. The theater is tentatively scheduled to open in winter 2008/2009 and specialize in screening Japanese films and anime.

Question:
Dubbing costs a lot and many people (myself included) don’t even listen to dubs. We prefer watching a work in its original language. How many people care about dubs? Would American anime distributors make more profit if they released subbed-only anime DVDs?

New Detail on Aquarian Age Movie

Broccoli USA has clarified that the recently announced Aquarian Age motion picture will be a live action adaptation of Sakurako Gokurakuin’s manga series Aquarian Age ~ Juvenile Orion, which is itself based on Broccoli’s popular Aquarian Age collectable trading card game. The film is tentatively scheduled for Japanese release next spring.
