Shin SOS Dai Tokyo Tankentai Movie Premier Scheduled

The official homepage for the upcoming anime film Shin SOS Dai Tokyo Tankentai (The New SOS Tokyo Metro Explorers) has announced that the picture will open theatrically in Japan on May 19th. The 2D & 3D cel-shaded anime movie is based on a manga by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Anime Expo Gets Death Note Exclusives

Anime Expo has announced that Death Note anime director Tetsuro Araki and Death Note anime character designer Masaru Kitao will attend this year’s Anime Expo as guests of honor. Furthermore, Anime Expo will host 35mm theatrical screenings of the live action Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name motion pictures.

Fourth Naruto Movie Announced

The official Japanese Naruto movie homepage has updated with the announcement of the fourth Naruto motion picture. The Naruto Shippuden movie will open in Japanese theaters on August 4th.

Oban Star Racers Wins Animeland and Polymanga Awards

French/Japanese co-produced animated series Oban Star Racers received “The Grand Prix Animeland 2007 de la Meilleure Serie Animation non-japonaise 2006″ (Animeland Award for Best non-Japanese Animation of 2006) at the “Game In Paris” convention on April 14th.

Oban Star Racers was also awarded the “Grand Prix du Divertissement ‘07 - Eurojap Edition animée” (Entertainment Grand Award for a European creation with an influence from Japan) award on April 7th at the Polymanga convention held in Switzerland.

Geneon Acquires Zero no Tsukaima

At this past weekend’s Anime Boston convention, Geneon announced its acquisition of the 2006 anime television series Zero no Tsukaima. The series will be released in America under the translated title “The Familiar of Zero.”

AD Vision Acquires Innocent Venus

Romeo x Juliet Episode 1 Available Free Online

Genshiken Second TV Series Announced

The official Japanese Genshiken anime homepage has formally announced that a second Genshiken anime TV series will debut this fall. An unconfirmed statement on the Moon Phase message board implies that the new TV series will be a continuation of the Genshiken OVA series story.

Ask John: Should There Be More Variety in Shonen & Shoujo Anime?

Question:
How come the creators of anime think that boys like action and girls like romance? In shojo, there’s always romance stuff. And shonen just has epic action and adventure. I think some girls get tried of romance and desire to see something with action packed stuff. Can shojo have some action adventure stuff just like shonen? Or boy and girl mangas should remain separate? They should try something besides romance.

Numerous Manga Nominated for 2007 Eisner Award

The nominees for the 2007 Eisner Awards, the highest honor in America’s comic book industry, have been announced, and numerous Japanese manga have been nominated. Part of the reason for the relatively large number of Japanese nominees is this year’s debut of a “Best U.S. Edition of International Material-Japan” category. Manga nominees are:

Best U.S. Edition of International Material-Japan
After School Nightmare, by Setona Mizushiro (Go! Comi)
Antique Bakery, by Fumi Yoshinaga (Digital Manga)
Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, by Naoki Urasawa (Viz)
Old Boy, by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi (Dark Horse Manga)
Walking Man, by Jiro Taniguchi (Fanfare/Ponent Mon)

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster is also nominated for “Best Continuing Series”

Project X Challengers: Cup Noodle, by Tadashi Katoh (Digital Manga) is nominated as “Best Reality-Based Work”

The “Best Archival Collection/Project-Comic Books” category includes nominations for:

The winners of the 2007 Eisners will be announced on Friday, July 27th.

Tekkon Kinkreet American Premiers Scheduled

Studio 4°C’s acclaimed anime film Tekkon Kinkreet has been scheduled to premier in North America with screenings at the New York City Museum of Modern Art from April 25-30.

The film will screen at the Hawaii International Film Festival in Honolulu on April 26th.

The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival will screen the film on May 6th.

The Platform International Animation Festival held in June in Portland, Oregon has plans to screen the film.

First Look at Ikkitousen PS2 Game

Famitsu Magazine has published the first screenshots of Marvelous Entertainment’s upcoming Playstation 2 action/fighting game Ikkitousen: Shining Dragon, based on the current Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny anime television series. The game is scheduled for Japanese release this summer.

Ask John: Is Anime in America a Dying Fad?

Question:
In an earlier question, you mentioned that of the 1,000 Haruhi Suzumiya DVDs being sold, only 500 made it out the door. Doesn’t this incident, along with the slower licensing and declining sales, tell us that the home video anime market in America is, for the most part, a fad that has finally run its course?
