Ask John: Why Hasn’t Kurau Been Released in America?

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Question:
I’m a big fan of the show Kurau Phantom Memory and I was wondering of the possible reasons why ADV hasn’t released the show. As you are in the anime DVD distribution business, you might know the reason for licence hold ups. If ADV doesn’t release Kurau Phantom Memory, could you see other companies like Bandai or Geneon or yourself (AnimeNation) picking it up if the chance came along? Is the Bones name big enough to sell this show?

I’ve been collecting anime for some time now, and I’ve come to the realization that I have a lot of series that I’ve never watched, and worse yet, DVDs that I’ve bought copies of but never opened. Is collecting just for the sake of collecting okay? I mean, I love watching anime, but could it be more of a type of psychosis to just keep buying and buying?

Ask John: Why Isn’t Anime Digital Distribution More Common?

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

Question:
With more and more people getting their fansubs online- without paying a cent for them- isn’t the Japanese anime industry thinking of ways to put more money in their pockets instead of losing out to people who translate and distribute more series than actually make it to US shores? Would it work for Anime companies to hire English translators to sub the first few episodes of a series and put them up on their site with American commercial advertisements? Then they can use the viewership to gauge what series would really be worth sending outside of Japan?
