Ask John: Will the Guyver TV Series Be Released in America?

Question:
Do you think that the new Guyver series, Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor will be coming to America any time soon? Everyone who has seen its run in Japan and/or has got a copy of a subbed version has raved about it. Do you think that since Manga Entertainment lost the rights to the original series from the 1980s they will try extra hard to obtain the new series?

“Florida’s Favorite Anime Convention,” Anime Festival Orlando (AFO), will host its 7th annual convention on July 28-30 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida. This year’s guests include Veronica Taylor, Travis Willingham, Aaron Dismuke, Vic Mignogna, Chris Sabat, Doug Smith, Quinton Flynn, Jeff Nimoy and Marc Handler. This year’s event theme is “Hooray for Hollywood ” and will feature the “AFO – A Night at the Movies” fan film contest plus formal awards show: “The AF’Oscars.” Additionally, AFO is pleased to feature “Project Cosplay” – a fresh event that has already created a buzz in the anime community.

TOKYOPOP Announces Summer Reading Initiative

TOKYOPOP has announced a collaborative effort with the Los Angeles Public Library to promote teen reading. Teens age 11 to 18 who join the “Manga Madness Summer Reading Club” at their local library branch will receive a free folder, book bag, reading log, and bookmarks. Every branch will have special scheduled teen programs as part of the reading club. Each participant will receive a certificate at the end of the summer reading program.

At the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library and its 71 branches, librarians have doubled and in some cases tripled the number of manga series ordered for their young adult collections because of high demand from teen readers.

Anime Expo to Stream Events Online

Anime Expo has announced that popular convention events including the opening and closing ceremonies, masquerade, AX Idol competition, and SPJA Charity Auction will stream live online at AX Backstage.org. The video feed will be provided by Stickam, which will also allow webmasters to host the streaming video on their own websites.

UC Irvine to Offer Course on Anime

The University of California’s Irvine Extension will offer a course entitled, “Manga & Anime Explosion: What, Why, How & Wow!” The course will examine the historical and cultural significance of anime and manga and how they have shaped the look and feel of many of today’s Hollywood productions. In addition, students will apply methods of story and character development found in manga to screenwriting, advertising, information publishing and other creative endeavors. The course is aimed at both screenwriters seeking to expand their writing skills and add a new technique to their existing portfolio, and the growing number of passionate fans who seek greater knowledge of these art forms and how they’ve grown to become a phenomenon. Professional screenwriter, commercial director, and manga expert Northrop Davis will teach the course.

The five-week UC Irvine Extension course is open to the public and begins September 26 on the UC Irvine campus. The cost for the program is $185. Advent Children Selling Briskly

Home Media Retailing Magazine has reported that the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie has shipped more than 1.4 million units in North America and in English-speaking European markets. The title stands at 2.4 million units shipped worldwide. The DVD hit no. 2 on Nielsen VideoScan sales charts its first week in stores. However, Advent Children still lags behind similar mainstream hit anime The Animatrix, which reportedly sold 2.7 million copies in 2003.

Original Gojira Coming to American DVD

ClassicMedia has announced plans to release a special edition double disc DVD set containing the original 96 minute Japanese language Gojira movie and the 79 minute American cut of the film, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” this September. The release will mark the first time ever that the original, uncut Japanese version of the 1954 Godzilla movie will be available on official American home video.

Ask John: Are Official Japanese Spin-Offs in Other Media Common?

Question:
I noticed recently that there have been several manga publishers that have gotten into prequels (GTO: Shonan Junai-gumi), new story arcs (Evangelion: Angelic Days) and non-manga novels (Please Teacher, Love Hina). Are these “officially sanctioned” derivative works common in Japan and are just recently translated here in the U.S.? Do doujinshi ever get published as “official” variants of a series?

Project Blue Chikyuu SOS Trailer Online

Mangazoo now hosts a Flash trailer for the first episode of the six episode retro futuristic sci-fi action anime OVA series Project Blue ~ Earth SOS (Project Blue Chikyuu SOS). The first episode will premier on the AT-X cable network on July 2 and hit Japanese DVD on August 25th.

Tales of Symphonia Anime Announced

Animate has announced that UFOTABLE will produce a Tales of Symphonia OVA series for Japanese release next year, based on the popular Namco RPG. The series will be directed by Haruo Tonosaki (eX-Driver) and feature character design by Akira Matsushima (Rurouni Kenshin Seisouhen).
