Ask John: Is Anime Too Expensive in America?

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Question:
This is my opinion on the Anime industry in America. People download anime because it’s better then paying $30 a DVD and only getting 3-5 episodes. For series that are over 50 episodes, it’s not worth it. Person to person or web servers that charge a flat fee and give the user a large download are more efficient. This is America were people look to get the most for the lowest price. So what is John’s opinion on the American anime industry? Do you agree that if venders would give more episodes per disc, or a double disc set for $30 that has 13-15 episodes people would buy more? An alternative is lowering the price. At $5.00 a DVD that has 3-5 episodes per disc, people would start buying more. With international prices as high as they are, there is no way anime will last much longer in America.

Ask John: Is Moe Anime Just a Passing Trend?

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

Question:
I’ve noticed alot of shows now rely heavily on moe-fetish elements. But I’ve also noticed that most anime in the late 80’s/early 90’s period was mostly plot driven. I’m not going to argue that there’s still a fair amount of shows aimed for audiences looking for “substance,” but the more mainstream and popular anime today do seem to aim at the rather moe/otaku centric crowd. Although we might again encounter another paradigim shift of shows that take themselves seriously, do you think the advent of these new “moe” anime shows is just a trend?

Why don’t many Japanese anime artists show themselves in photos? Some draw themselves as an anime-ish caricatures, but I never see the real life them.
