Ask John: Why Can’t Anime Series Be Released All At Once?

Question:
Why can’t licensing companies release all the DVDs or episodes of an anime all at once? Is it because the dubbing of the series is still being done or are the companies trying to make as much money as possible off the separate DVDs? If so, why can’t they just release the whole series on separate DVDs all at once?

High School Girls TV Series Announced

Japanese publisher Futabasha has announced that Towa Oshima’s manga series Girl’s High School Students will be adapted into an anime TV series. The Girl’s High School Students anime will be produced by Studio Arms and directed by Yoshitaka Fujimoto, director of Akihabara Cyber Team and the Nuku-Nuku TV series.

The Girl’s High School Students manga has been released in America under the titled “High School Girls.”

More New Anime Series Announced

According to Anime News Service, Magicu (”Magical Cute”) Magazine volume 20, scheduled for Japanese release on the 25th, will officially announce an anime TV series adaptation of artist Taguchi Sennendo’s manga series Yoshinaga Sanchi No Gargoyle.

Anime News Service and Moon Phase both report that Ken Kitashiba & Yasuhiro Watanabe’s political intrigue detective manga serial Government Crime Investigation Agent Zaizen Jotaro (”Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro”) will be adapted into a 13 episode anime television series next year. Neither website cites a source for this announcement.

Moon Phase also reports that Tokyo Kids will produce an anime adaptation of Takeaki Momose’s current manga series Majikan. Takeaki Momose may be better known to Americans as the creator of Miami Guns.

Mari Iijima to Reprise Minmei Role in English

At this past weekend’s Oni-Con in Houston, Texas, AD Vision announced that original Japanese voice actress for Lynn Minmei in Superdimensional Fortress Macross will also play Minmei in AD Vision’s upcoming English language dub of the series.

While reportedly the first time an original Japanese voice actor will reprise a role in an English dub, actually Japanese voice actress Miyuki Sawashiro has already reprised her role as Puchiko in Synch-Point’s forthcoming American DVD releases of the Di-Gi-Charat movie and Leave it to Piyoko series.

TOKYOPOP Cancels Flower of Eden

TOKYOPOP has announced that it will comply with a request from Japanese publisher Kodansha to not publish an English language translation of Suetsugu Yuki’s 13 volume manga series Flower of Eden. All of artist Suetsugu Yuki’s manga was withdrawn from publication in Japan recently when controversy over Yuki copying art from other manga artists was discovered. Yuki has admitted to copying scenes from other artists’s work and has publicly apologized.

Ghibli Museum to Screen New Miyazaki Anime

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka City, a suburb of Tokyo, has announced that 3 or possibly 4 new short films by director Hayao Miyazaki will screen exclusively at the museum. The first of the short films, “Mizugumo Monmon” (Water Spider Monmon), will begin screening at the museum in January 2006.

The Ghibli Museum has a small theater which screens exclusive Ghibli produced anime movies, changing the films every three months.

Turner Classic Movies to Air Ghibli Films

ICv2 News has learned that the Turner Classic Movies network has plans to broadcast nine Studio Ghibli produced anime films, including Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Whisper of the Heart. The films will be broadcast in their original widescreen aspect ratio and may be broadcast in their original Japanese langauge with English subtitles.

A complete list of films and broadcast dates will be released next week.

TOKYOPOP Acquires New Manga Titles?

Amazon has attributed several new manga licenses to TOKYOPOP, which TOKYOPOP itself has not yet announced. Reportedly on April 30, 2006, TOKYOPOP will release:

Magical X Miracle volume 1, by Yuzu Mizutani
Karin volume 1, by Yuna Kagesaki

I am not very familar with Japanese television, so therefore forgive my ignorance if I sound stupid. I was just wondering if older, more successful, anime are replayed on T.V. similar to the way we replay successful older shows in america. And if this is the case, which types of shows are typically replayed?

Gen Fukunaga Discusses the FUNimation Channel

Galaxy Anime now hosts a streaming audio interview with FUNimation CEO Gen Fukunaga in which Fukunaga discusses plans for the FUNimation Channel.

Galaxy Anime has also updated with trailers including Gankutsuou anime from Geneon, Dragonball Z Budokai: Tenkaichi from Atari, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence from Konami, and Siren 2 and Gunparade Orchestra game trailers from Sony.

Trigun Movie Announced

Madhouse Studios founder and president Masao Maruyama has revealed that Madhouse has plans to produce a Trigun anime feature film for release “in a couple of years.” The announcement is reported in the UK anime magazine Neo Magazine and the November issue of Anime Insider Magazine.

Yu Yu Hakusho Returns to Cartoon Network Tomorrow

Yu Yu Hakusho episode 89 will premier on the Cartoon Network at 5:30 AM on Saturday, October 22nd. The Cartoon Network has previously aired Yu Yu Hakusho episodes 1-88, but reportedly pulled the show from its broadcast schedule due to low ratings.
