New Anime Distributor Enters the Field

Discotek Media, a company, “started by two diehard cult, Asian, and anime film fans,” has informed Anime on DVD of its acquisition of translation rights to Animal Treasure Island (1971), Puss ‘n Boots (1969), Taro the Dragon Boy (1979), former AnimEigo licenses Lupin III: Legend of the Gold Babylon & Fuma Conspiracy, and the 1974 live action Lupin III movie “Lupin III: Strange Psychokinetic Strategy.”

DramaQueen Announces New Acquisitions

DramaQueen has announced its acquisition of translation rights to Takanaga Hinako’s yaoi manga Challengers, and Minase Masara’s yaoi manga Uso To Kiss (“Lies & Kisses”).

First Ever Cosplay Dance Contest Announced

Keiichi.net Radio has announced the first ever Cosplay Dance Contest. Entrants will dress in cosplay outfits and dance to their favorite anime or J-pop music. A video recording of the dance must be submitted for judging, and the winner will recieve $100 worth of gift certificates for dance apparel and anime apparel.

The Cosplay Dance Contest is not for “Ravers.” “If you want to rave, go somewhere else,” said contest organizer Jose Ramos. “We’re looking for dance which is in a recognizable form… Jazz, Acrobatic, Lyrical, Ballet, Pointe, just to name a few.”

Starting on Labor Day, those interested in entering the Cosplay Dance Contest must submit an e-mail notification. Entries will close on Monday, September 19, or when twenty completed entries are received, whichever occurs first. Contestants will then have at least three weeks to prepare costumes and dance routines, then two additional weeks to record their solo performances and submit them to the contest. Manga Schedules 1983 Astro Boy DVD Boxed Set

Manga Entertainment has scheduled the release of an Astro Boy Collectors Box Set for November 22nd. The 7 disc DVD collection will contain all 51 episodes of the color Astro Boy series from 1983 with selectable English and original Japanese language tracks. The DVD set will retail at $39.98.

Next M.O.E. Anime Title Revealed

Japan’s Megami Magazine has revealed plans for an anime television series titled “Rakugo Tennyo Oyui.” According to Moon Phase, the series will be produced by M.O.E. and animated by Studio TNK, the studio behind UFO Princess Valkyrie, Ryusei Sentai Musumet, and Kannazuki no Miko. The show will tentatively debut in January 2006.

Honey & Clover Live Action Movie Announced

The Nikkan Sports Newspaper has reported that Umino Chika’s Hachimitsu to Clover (“Honey & Clover) manga series will be adapted into a live action movie. Main character Takemoto Yuuta will be played by Sakurai Sho, a member of the popular J-Pop group ARASHI. Yu Aoi will play petit “Hagu-chan”. The film will be directed by former television commercial director Masahiro Takada. The Honey & Clover movie is scheduled for Japanese release next summer.

Right Stuf Schedules New Releases

Right Stuf has announced that its Irresponsible Captain Tylor OVA series Ultra Collection will retail at $69.95 beginning November 8th.

The Vanilla Series: Perverse Investigations (“Vanilla Series: Seisai”) DVD will retail at $24.95 also beginning November 8th.

New R2 Ghibli DVD Announced

According to Nausicaa.net, the “Ghibli ga Ippai Special Short Short” DVD, scheduled for Japanese release this fall, will include Hayao Miyazaki’s On Your Mark, Yoshiyuki Momose’s Portable Airport, the Sorairo no Tane TV spot, Space Station No.5, and assorted commercials (such as, possibly, the Umacha Tea and House Foods commercials).

The Ghibli ga Ippai Special Short Short DVD will not contain the three short films screened exclusively at the Ghibli Museum (Koro’s Big Day Out, The Whale Hunt, Mei and the Kittenbus).

Western Composers Work on Blood+

The official Japanese Blood+ television series website has announced that composers Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Batman Begins, The Thin Red Line) and Mark Mancina (Speed, Con Air, Twister, Training Day) will create music for the anime TV series.

The show’s opening theme song will be performed by Hitomi Takahashi, best known for singing the third Gundam Seed Destiny opening theme song “Bokutachi no Yukue.”

Is there something within Japanese history or culture behind the idea of a character or characters involved in or continuously fighting “losing battles” – an idea I (and probably many others) first heard about when Gundam Wing first came to North America and I see it coming up again in the new series Samurai 7?

Black Cat Trailer Released

Japanese television network TBS now hosts a downloadable Windows Media format trailer for the upcoming Gonzo produced anime television series Black Cat. The show is scheduled to premier on October 6th.
