Ask John: Are Anime DVDs With Low Episode Counts a New Trend?

Question:
I was recently disappointed at the number of episodes on the Gantz and Shamen King DVDs that I bought. Is this a current trend to package fewer episodes for a given price point? Should retailers be consistent in letting their customers know how many episodes are on each disk?

Happy-7 Anime Announced

Japanese publisher Shueisha has announced that Kawasaki Hiroyuki’s Happy-7 manga series will be adapted into an anime TV series. According to Moon Phase, Happy-7 the TV Manga will premier in October as a 13 episode series.

Inuyasha TCG to Include Autographed Cards

Score Entertainment has announced that a limited number of stickers autographed by Inuyasha creator Rumiko Takahashi will be randomly packed into the fourth series of Inuyasha Trading Game Cards, the “Yokai” series, scheduled to go on sale August 28th. Takahashi is notoriously famous for rarely providing autographs.

Viz Schedules New Manga Titles

Viz has announced release dates for a number of manga titles making their debut in America.

Death Note volume 1 will retail at $7.99 beginning October 4th.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure volume 1 will retail at $9.99 beginning September 1st.
MeruPuri volume 1 will retail at $9.99 beginning July 5th.
Monster volume 1 will retail at $9.99 beginning October 4th
Socrates In Love volume 1 will retail at $8.99 beginning October 4th.
Zatch Bell (AKA: Konjiki no Gash Bell!!) volume 1 retail at $9.99 beginning September 6th.

RSI Schedules New Captain Tylor DVD Set Release

Right Stuf International has announced that the Irresponsible Captain Tylor Limited Edition Ultra Box Set will retail at $99.98 beginning July 5th.

The limited edition set will include the entire Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV series on four DVDs, two DVDs of Japanese staff and cast interviews and related material, a CD soundtrack, a 32 page novella written by Captain Tylor creator Hitoshi Yoshioka, and a 64 page booklet of artwork, interviews, and trivia.

Bandai Planning American UMD Anime Releases

According to Anime News Network, Bandai Entertainment has tentative plans to begin releasing anime on Sony Playstation Portable format UMD discs later this year. Titles likely to appeal to gamers, such as “Gundam Seed movie 1″ and the Escaflowne movie are being considered for UMD release. UMD anime releases are expected to retail at $19.98 each.

Since the UMD format is still so new, it’s uncertain right now whether UMD anime releases will support multiple language tracks and subtitles.

TOKYOPOP Announces U.K. Version of Rising Stars Competition

TOKYOPOP has announced plans to host its first “Rising Stars of Manga” competition for U.K. based artists. The competition will run from May 15 through September 30th.

New Gundam Universe Announced

Bandai of Japan has announced development of a PS2 RPG titled “Gundam: True Odyssey.” True Odyssey will feature an entirely new setting, not based on any previous Gundam story. True Odyssey producer Norihiko Ushimura and game designer Shinji Namikawa comment that they decided to go with an original setting for the game due to the belief that Gundam fans are most likely “getting bored” with the existing storylines. True Odyssey’s character designs will be provided by former Capcom illustrator Akira Yasuda. The game is tentatively scheduled for Japanese release this summer.

Fox Plans New Children’s Network for Europe

Jetix (formerly Fox Kids) will debut its “GXT” network in Italy on May 1st. The GXT network will broadcast reality shows, extreme sports, wrestling, Japanese animation, music and live-action. If the GXT network proves successful, it may expand to the UK.

I have a collection of “Celebrity’s Just for Kids” video cassettes from the late 1980s or so. Who was responsible for this publishing? Whatever happened to them? What is John’s opinion of the line?
