First Look at American One Piece Opening

Galaxy Anime now hosts a streaming video clip of 4Kids’ English dubbed opening animation for One Piece, as well as video interviews with Roz Nowiki, 4Kids’ Vice President of Marketing and Sales; John Easum of Shopro Entertainment on “Zatchbell”; and Henry Goto & Ichiro Sasaki of Geneon Entertainment on Samurai Champloo.

New Details on DC Comics’ CMX Line?

Grotesque Anatomy has posted an unconfirmed press announcement from DC Comics revealing details of DC’s new CMX line of English translated manga. According to the press release, the CMX line will debut this October with Madara, by Tajima Sho-u & Otsuka Eiji, Mekakushi no Kuni, by Tsukuba Sakura, and Eroika Yori Ai wo Komete, by Aoike Yasuko. The second wave of CMX titles will include Fujii Mihona’s Gals!, Oh! Great’s Tenjoh Tenge, Tanemura Arina’s Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Ariyoshi Kyoko’s Swan, Sei Ito’s Monster Collection, and Takanashi Mitsuba’s Akuma de Soro.

The CMX line will be edited and supervised by former Raijin Comics editor Jake Tarbox.

Comics One Announces New Manga Titles

Comics One has announced that the first volume of Towa Oshima’s High School Girls will be released this August, and the first volume of Yu Aikawa’s Dark Edge will be released in September.

Shonen Ace Announces New Anime TV Series

The cover of the August issue of Monthly Shonen Ace-A Magazine reports that Sosuke Kaize’s action manga Grenadier and Kaishaku’s manga Kaminatsuki no Miko will be adapted into anime TV series for broadcast this fall. The Grenadier animation will be produced by Studio Live, the animators behind World of Narue. The Kaminatsuki no Miko anime will be produced by TNK, the studio that animated Kaishaku’s manga series UFO Princess Valkyrie.

Petit Cossette OAV 2 Broadcast Scheduled

Japanese satellite TV network AT-X has scheduled the premier broadcast of Petit Cossette OAV 2 for July 11th. The broadcast will be coupled with a re-broadcast of OAV 1.

Bandai’s LaLaBit Market site hosts the first screenshots of the upcoming Gundam Seed: Owaranai Asu E (Gundam Seed: Neverending Tomorrow) game for the Playstation 2. According to the June 18th update on Pam’s Home Page, the game will include 40 minutes of new anime footage.

Ask John: Why do Mecha Anime Openings Include Nude Women?

Question:
I have noticed in some mecha anime openings (Evangelion, Gundam Seed, Nadesico, etc.) they sometimes have a very quick shot of an anime girl with no clothes on, yet she is not in the anime, yet they drew her in the opening. Could you explain why these girls are there, or even who they might be?

Go Go Anime Documentary Announced

Live Sockets Entertainment, a leading producer of street racing, underground hip-hop and action sports videos, has announced plans to distribute a new documentary on anime fans titled “Go Go Anime!” The film is reported to be, “The first documentary to explore the fans’ experiences in the world of Japanese animation.” Representatives from Live Sockets Entertainment will be previewing the trailer and promoting the documentary at Anime Expo 2004 in Anaheim, CA on July 2-5, 2004.

The documentary begins with member interviews of Sailor Jamboree, an internationally renowned professional performance troupe and follows their performance process; tours the anime-infested house and outrageous collections of one loyal otaku; roams the events of the 2003 Anaheim Anime Expo; and showcases the art of three American manga artists. “Go Go Anime!” grabs the intermingled relationships of the performers, fans and artists while capturing some poignant thoughts from the anime devotees.

Why are so many strong-willed and/or stubborn women in anime alcoholics? Off the top of my head, Shikijo from Mahoromatic, Misato from Evangelion, Yukari from Azumanga Daioh, Kisaragi from Phantom Quest Corp., Weda from Jungle Wa Itsumo, Mao from Full Metal Panic!, and to a lesser extent Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo! come to mind.
