Corsham Teams Up With Wild Brain

Monday, October 20th, 2003

Award-winning US animation producers Wild Brain have agreed to co-produce the latest Corsham Entertainment show “Natural Born Kittens” a 26 half hour teenage comedy anime series about four ancient Egyptian Cat Goddesses posing as teenage schoolgirls. Thrown into a modern world whose inhabitants are even weirder than they are, the kittens react with a combination of bad language and globe-threatening violence. Stylistically, Natural Born Kittens allows the epic, futuristic feel of traditional anime to explode the conventions of the classic sitcom. Sailor Moon meets The Young Ones, anyone?

WILD BRAIN INC. is an award-winning American animation studio whose client list includes Universal, Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, DreamWorks, Warner Bros, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Oxygen. The company’s original series include Poochini, a European co-production that is airing globally and debuted in U.S. syndication in fall 2002, and the upcoming Vanilla Pudding, developed initially with Fox and Egmont Imagination. Television Business International’s independent poll [July 2002] of children’s programming executives placed Wild Brain among the world’s top 10 creative studios producing TV animation today.

Corsham Entertainment was recently set up by Oscar-winning Gary Kurtz, whose long list of producer credits includes Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, British animator Richard Bazley (Hercules, Pocahontas) and writer/producer Alastair Swinnerton, who co-created Lego’s multi-platform hit, Bionicle. Corsham is also shopping the Xmas special Jack Frost, being exec produced by Snowman veteran John Coates, and Terranoids, a boys action toon being co-produced with French studio TEVA and Spin Entertainment of Canada. Other projects on Corsham’s slate include Atomic Monsters, with Canada’s Context Pictures, and Bollywood Road, with Indian studio UTV Toons.

Ask John: What Was the First H-Game to Mainstream Anime Conversion?

Monday, October 20th, 2003

Question:
I’ve been watching a lot of new series this season and I’ve noticed a number of them have been hentai games. Like Popotan, Da Capo, and Kimi no Nozomu Eien. Anyway, the question I have is what H-game started it all? Which H-game was turned into a non-hentai anime series first? I’ve attempted to look back, but all I’ve got is To Heart, Comic Party, and Pia Carrot 2 DX as being the oldest.

Gunslinger Girl Anime Licensed?

Friday, October 17th, 2003

Yomiuri Online has published a short report on statements made by the president of Marvelous Entertainment regarding the influence of foreign investors on Japanese animation. In terms of business, foreign sponsorships are taking the traditional control and marketing of anime out of the hands of traditional sponsors including TV networks, toy companies and ad agencies, and putting greater control of the distribution and marketing of anime in the hands of anime producers themselves.

The article also states that the 13 episode Gunslinger Girl anime TV series has a budget of 13 million yen per episode (nearly $120,000 per episode), half of which has already been contributed by European and North American licenses. Common speculation within the fan community is that AD Vision has licensed the show for American release since AD Vision has already announced the acquisition of the manga translation rights.

Ojamajo Doremi Licensed?

Thursday, October 16th, 2003

According to C21 Media News, 4Kids Entertainment is in final negotiations to acquire the English language translation and distribution rights to the wildly successful Ojamajo Doremi shoujo anime TV series. “4Kids’ CEO Al Khan told C21 that he is bringing the toon to Fox Box in an attempt to expand the gender demographic of the block… ‘The designs are pretty so they appeal to girls, but the characters are very sexy so boys like them,’ he said. ‘We’re hoping to mix and match the block’s gender appeal.’”

Ojamajo Doremi (Useless Witch Doremi) debuted on Japanese television on February 7, 1999, and proceeded through 201 TV episodes in 4 series and 2 theatrical movies.
