Ask John: Why Did Faye Call Ed an Otaku?

Monday, January 20th, 2003

Question:
I noticed on the Cowboy Bebop episode “Jamming with Edward” that Faye had described Ed as a “lazy OTAKU who…” That’s the part I couldn’t understand. Now, I’m aware that otaku means fan [or anime fan in America] but for an anime, it doesn’t make much sense to say Ed is a “fan” of nothing, and I’m pretty sure Faye didn’t mean anime freak. Can you please find out what Faye meant?

Dragonball GT Release Scheduled

Friday, January 17th, 2003

After years of eager anticipation from Dragonball fans, FUNimation has finally schedule the American debut of Dragonball GT, the third Dragonball television series and only Dragonball series without the primary involvement of Dragonball creator Akira Toriyama.

Dragon Ball GT volume 1: Baby: Affliction, and Dragon Ball GT volume 2: Baby: Incubation will contain 3 episodes per uncut DVD or edited VHS tape and premier on April 15th at $24.95 per volume.

Dragon Ball GT volume 3: Baby: Creation, and Dragon Ball GT volume 4: Baby: Proliferation will contain 3 episodes per uncut DVD or edited VHS tape and retail at $24.95 each on May 20th.

(There is no confirmation yet of which episodes will be contained on these DVDs. Presumably these DVDs will include episodes 1-12; however the “Baby” saga of Dragonball GT does not begin until episode 22.)

FUNimation will also be releasing the fourth Dragonball theatrical movie, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power (Dragonball: Saikyo e no Michi), on April 29th in edited and uncut VHS and DVD formats. Path to Power was the Dragonball 10th anniversary movie and is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the Dragonball GT movie. It is a feature length adaptation of the conclusion of the Red Ribbon Saga from the original Dragonball television series.
