Ask John: Why Is It Called Bubblegum Crisis?

Question:
I am just wondering why the series called Bubblegum Crisis is called as Bubblegum Crisis even though in the series there is no crisis of any kind on bubblegum? Can you explain on why they called it Bubblegum Crisis.

Answer:
Kenichi Sonoda and Toshimichi Suzuki intended the series to be one in which the action grew increasingly larger and more dramatic, like a bubblegum bubble, until it reached an explosive climax. That climax occurred in OAV three, which is sub-titled, Blow Up. That episode is the one in which the Knight Sabers go on the offensive and take the battle to Genom, and Sylia kills Brian J. Mason. BGC was an experimental series when it began. Just by watching the original OAVs, one can tell that the main story wrapped up in the first 3 OAVs. Episode 4 is obviously a stand-alone story that does not relate to the main story-line, and episodes 5 on are, stylistically, a new series.
