Ask John: What’s the Best Introductory Anime?

Question:
What would be better to show someone to get them into the world of anime/manga, and which show or manga would be best?

Answer:
I don’t think that there is a single ideal representative anime or manga that can introduce new viewers to Japanese comic art. Rather, I think that the ideal introductory anime and manga should depend upon the personality and tastes of the viewer. Studio Ghibli movies are universally acknowledged as some of the greatest animated films ever made, but despite their quality, they may not appeal to someone who’s interested in violent, sexy, exciting action. Films including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll are among the most common introductory anime for new American viewers, but these films aren’t suitable for young American viewers, and may not appeal to viewers who feel predisposed to dismiss sensationalistic or exploitive fantasy.

I think that the ideal way to introduce a new viewer to anime or manga is to let the prospective viewer decide what to watch. An experienced fan can advise and confirm a good choice, or prevent a new viewer from selecting a particularly poor introductory show. A potential new anime fan is probably more likely to engage with and enjoy watching or reading something he or she has personally chosen. An anime that appeals to a viewer’s personal aesthetic taste has the best chance of making a positive impression. When it comes to movies, something a person enjoys watching has more influence than the quality of the film itself. Citizen Kane may be a better quality movie than Charlie’s Angels, but that doesn’t mean that every viewer will enjoy and appreciate Citizen Kane more than Charlie’s Angels.

The ideal introduction to anime or manga isn’t necessarily the most outstanding anime or manga available. The perfect introductory anime is one that makes the viewer want to watch or read more. The genre or quality of the introductory title is entirely relevant to the viewer. That’s why I think that the best option is to either select an introductory anime that’s likely to appeal to the new viewer’s individual taste and expectations, or let the viewer personally choose an introductory anime.
