Ask John: Could Hero Tales Become a Hit in America?

Question:
Do you think Hero Tales will be as popular as Fullmetal Alchemist in the States?

Answer:
Jyushin Enbu ~Hero Tales~ probably has little chance of becoming as successful or popular in America as Fullmetal Alchemist because it’s not remotely as good. Fullmetal Alchemist had the benefit of an strong story composed by Hiromu Arakawa, brilliant direction from Seiji Mizushima, and excellent animation from Bones. Hero Tales had character designs from Hiromu Arakawa, but did not have strong, compelling story development, an exceptionally talented director, or consistently outstanding animation quality.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a brilliant series that deserves the acclaim and popularity it’s received. Jyushin Enbu is a mediocre show, at best. It didn’t become a big hit in Japan, and didn’t catch on with the American otaku community. So far, it’s not licensed for American release, and if the show does officially reach America, I don’t expect it to be especially successful.
